New bladder incontinence surgery available in Ottumwa

OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) -

On May 8th of this year, Ottumwa Regional Health Center started offering a minimally invasive surgery that provides a long-term solution to a patient’s overactive bladder.

On Thursday May 30th, Dr. Mahmoud Alameddine had 4 of these surgeries and one consultation. The surgery involves inserting a sensor in the low back of the patient to address the nerve that communicates to the bladder. With the consultation, a patient can do a trial of the nerve sensor for a week to see if it improves their symptoms by 50%.

This sensor is called InterStim X. This is an implantable device that delivers sacral neuromodulation (SNM) therapy for more than 10 years before a patient may need a battery replacement, and it does not restrict a patient from being able to have an MRI scan like many implantable devices.

Dr.Alameddine said, “This is essentially, gentle nerve stimulation that controls the pathway between the brain to the bladder to restore the function of the bladder.”

One of Dr.Alameddine’s patients, Janice Morris, told me about her life before the surgery on the 30th. Morris said, “It really affected my life, I couldn’t really go anywhere because I always needed to be near a bathroom.”

Morris said, getting relief for an overactive bladder is life changing and now the surgery is available at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center. She said, “Where I live two women have already had it done, the same procedure, through doctor, and they’re getting along great and that was a great encouragement to me also. “

Dr. Alameddine said this minimally invasive procedure takes less than an hour to insert the sensor in the lower back of the patient to make a lifetime of a difference. He said, “imagine, you have to adjust your visits to places where you know where is the bathroom. Now you’re just free, you regain your life you regain your freedom.”

Dr.Alameddine says this procedure is covered by most insurances while having an 84% success rate. The only side effects involve monitoring the incision to prevent infections.
