Celebrations can happen anywhere and a 68th wedding anniversary should certainly be cause for celebration, even in a hospital! Robert and Shirley Singley didn’t plan on Robert being a patient on ARU on this special day, but after a fall outside on a cold January day that resulted in a broken hip, he was referred to the Acute Rehab Unit at Ottumwa Regional Health Center for physical therapy where he was told “he would receive exceptional care”.
As the big day approached, their granddaughter asked Robert and Shirley what their plans were to celebrate their anniversary. “We didn’t plan to be in the hospital, of course”, explained Shirley, “so I told her we would just reminisce and share our favorite memories that day.”
When Roni Gould, Admitting Clerk, and Deb Arnt, Unit Clerk heard about this special date, they stepped into action. Roni brought in a beautiful bouquet of red carnations and Deb added an order from the ORHC dietary department for two yummy pieces of chocolate cake for the couple to enjoy. “The flowers brighten up the room so nicely,” said Shirley. “And chocolate cake is Robert’s favorite! The pieces were so generous; we saved the rest for the next day!”
Roger and Shirley are cattle farmers, with over 70 head of cattle. Robert’s son is tending to the herd while he recovers. “His therapy is going quite nicely and he can’t wait to get back to farming!” said Shirley. Along with their 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren they are expecting 2 more, so have a lot to go home to and enjoy thanks to the caring staff of Ottumwa Regional Acute Rehabilitation Unit.
Happy 68th wedding anniversary Robert and Shirley Singley!
