Insomnia can be caused by many different conditions, sometimes occurring with specific stressful events in the environment.

Medical conditions may also lead to insomnia as well as irregular schedule of sleeping and waking, caffeine beverages, certain medications or excessive use of alcohol.

Insomnia may also be seen with sleep apnea or with periodic leg movements in sleep.  Many insomniacs can be helped by their family doctors, but in severe cases, evaluations by a sleep specialist is necessary.
